Complete dentures are used when all the teeth have been lost in either your upper or lower arch of the mouth. They allow you to smile, speak and chew in a similar manner to a natural set of teeth.

One version of a complete denture is called an immediate denture. An immediate denture is a complete denture that is placed at the same time as your last remaining tooth is removed. It allows you to instantly have a full set of teeth and walk out of the office. It is not uncommon to need a denture reline as we heal, the bone may decrease.

Another version of a complete denture is called an overdenture, which is also known as an implant-supported denture. Overdentures are a very effective form of complete denture therapy that are preferred by some patients for their more stabilized and fixed fit.

partial is a tooth replacement appliance that replaces one or more missing teeth. It is held on by clipping on to some of your existing natural teeth or crowns

CONVENTIONAL PARTIAL DENTURE is a tooth replacement appliance that stays in place by hooking or clipping on to some of your existing natural teeth or crowns. You can generally identify a conventional partial denture by a small metal clasp around one or more teeth.

At Black Hills Area Dental, we work with you in depth on a missing tooth solution that is based on your goals. Ultimately, we want you to feel supported by a treatment plan that will make your smile happy and healthy again.

FAQs.
What are dentures and why might I need them?

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. They come in two types: complete and partial. Complete dentures are used when all teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. Dentures not only restore your smile, but also your ability to chew and speak properly. They can also help maintain the shape of your face and prevent remaining teeth from shifting in your mouth. Additionally, dentures can improve your overall quality of life by boosting your confidence and allowing you to enjoy a wider variety of foods. They’re particularly beneficial for those who have lost teeth due to injury, decay, or gum disease.

What can I expect when getting dentures in Rapid City at Black Hills Area Dental?

At Black Hills Area Dental, Dr. Bart Samuelson and his team are committed to providing a comfortable and seamless experience. The process begins with a consultation where Dr. Samuelson assesses your oral health and discusses your needs and preferences. If dentures are the best solution, he will take impressions of your mouth to ensure a perfect fit. Once your dentures are ready, he will adjust them as necessary to ensure comfort and functionality. The team will also instruct you on how to care for your dentures and maintain your oral health. Throughout the process, you can expect personalized care and attention to detail. Dr. Samuelson will schedule follow-up appointments to ensure your dentures are functioning well and to address any concerns you may have as you adjust to your new teeth.

How do I care for my dentures?

Denture care is crucial for maintaining their longevity and your oral health. Handle your dentures carefully to avoid damaging them. Clean them daily with a denture cleaner and a soft-bristled toothbrush to remove food particles and plaque. When not wearing them, keep your dentures in a safe place covered in water to prevent them from drying out. Regular check-ups with Dr. Samuelson are also essential to ensure your dentures continue to fit well and remain in good condition. It’s important to avoid using hot water to clean your dentures as it can warp them. Also, remember to clean your gums, tongue, and any remaining natural teeth to maintain overall oral health and prevent infections.

How long do dentures last?

The lifespan of dentures varies depending on several factors, including the type of dentures, your oral hygiene, and how well you care for them. On average, dentures last between 5 to 7 years. However, they may need adjustments or relining over time due to natural changes in your mouth. Regular dental check-ups with Dr. Samuelson at Black Hills Area Dental can help ensure your dentures are always in top shape and serving you well. It’s important to note that your mouth naturally changes over time, which can affect the fit of your dentures. If you notice any discomfort or changes in fit, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment for an adjustment. With proper care and regular professional maintenance, you can maximize the lifespan of your dentures and maintain optimal oral health.
