What are Dental Veneers?

Dental Veneers Process
At our office, we offer two types of veneer services and work with you closely on which might be the best fit for your smile.
Traditional Veneers: The process of getting dental veneers typically takes place over the course of two appointments with Dr. Samuelson. During your first appointment, your teeth will be prepared for the veneers and impressions will be taken. These impressions will be used to create your custom-made veneers.
At your second appointment, your veneers will be bonded to your teeth. The bonding process is completed by first roughening the surface of your teeth so that the bonding material can adhere properly. Once the veneers are in place, they will be checked for fit and then trimmed and polished as needed.
Chairside Composite Veneers: Also known as direct veneers, this process is done same-day instead of needing to wait for a second appointment. Instead of porcelain, Dr. Samuelson will use resin to sculpt the veneer, place, and polish it all in one visit.

What are veneers and why might I consider getting them?
Veneers are thin, custom-made shells crafted from tooth-colored materials (like porcelain) designed to cover the front surface of your teeth. People consider getting veneers for a variety of reasons. They can drastically improve your smile by changing the color, shape, size, or length of your teeth. If you have discolored, worn down, chipped, broken, misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped teeth, veneers could be an excellent solution for you.
At Black Hills Area Dental in Rapid City, we have a team of highly skilled professionals led by Dr. Bart Samuelson, who specializes in creating natural-looking veneers that can transform your smile and boost your confidence.
What is the process of getting veneers at Black Hills Area Dental?
The process of getting veneers typically involves three appointments. During the first visit, we’ll discuss your needs and the desired outcome. We’ll take X-rays and make impressions of your mouth and teeth.
On your second visit, Dr. Samuelson will prepare your tooth for the veneer by removing about 1/2 millimeter of enamel from the tooth surface, which is nearly equal to the thickness of the veneer to be added. Next, we’ll make a model or impression of your tooth, which is sent out to a dental laboratory to construct your veneer. This process usually takes 2-4 weeks.
On your third visit, we’ll apply the veneer to your tooth to check its fit and color. Once everything is perfectly adjusted, your tooth will be cleaned, polished, and etched for optimal bonding. The veneer is then cemented to your tooth and a special light is used to quickly harden the cement. Lastly, we’ll make any final adjustments and schedule a follow-up visit to check how your gums are responding to the presence of your veneer.
How long do veneers last?
The longevity of veneers can vary based on the type of veneer and how well they are cared for. On average, you can expect veneers to last anywhere from 7 to 15 years. After this period, the veneers would need to be replaced. It’s important to note that veneers can chip or crack just like regular teeth, especially if you chew on hard foods or objects. Regular visits to Black Hills Area Dental will ensure your veneers and overall oral health are maintained.
Are there any risks associated with getting veneers?
As with any medical procedure, there are some risks associated with getting veneers. These can include the potential for the veneers to dislodge or fall off, an increased sensitivity to hot and cold, and the potential for the color of the veneer to not perfectly match your other teeth. However, at Black Hills Area Dental, we take all necessary precautions to minimize these risks. Dr. Samuelson uses his extensive experience and the latest technology to ensure the veneers fit perfectly, match the color of your teeth, and are applied using techniques that minimize sensitivity and maximize longevity.
