Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical deep cleaning procedure that is performed below the gum line to remove tartar (hardened plaque) and bacteria. This procedure is recommended for patients who have periodontal disease as it’s the only way to effectively treat and manage the condition.
The first step in scaling and root planing is to numb the gums with a local anesthetic to ensure that you are comfortable during the procedure. Next, we use special instruments to remove the plaque and tartar from your teeth and root surfaces. We then will smooth out any rough spots on and around your entire tooth structure. This helps to prevent bacteria and tartar from reattaching and accumulating in and around these areas in the future.

What Does Laser-Assisted Scaling and Root Planing Involve?
Laser-assisted scaling and root planing is only performed after a thorough examination of the mouth. Dr. Samuelson will take X-rays, conduct a visual examination, and make a diagnosis before recommending or beginning treatment. Depending on the current condition of your gums, the amount of calculus present, the depth of the pockets, and the progression of the periodontitis, local anesthetic may be used.
Scaling
This procedure is performed with specialized dental instruments and typically includes an ultrasonic scaling tool. The scaling tool removes calculus and plaque from the surface of the crown and root. In many cases, the scaling tool also delivers an antimicrobial agent below the gumline to help reduce oral bacteria.
Root Planing
Root planing removes cementum and surface dentin that is embedded with microorganisms, toxins, and tartar. The root of the tooth is smoothed to promote good healing and to make it harder for bacteria to colonize in the future.
Laser Treatment
Following the deep cleaning, the gum pockets and root surfaces are treated with a water laser to promote reattachment of the gum tissue to the tooth. The laser soothes irritation and supports faster, more comfortable healing.
At a follow-up appointment, Dr. Samuelson or our hygienist will thoroughly examine the gums again to measure how well the pockets have healed. If any pockets still measure more than 3mm in depth, additional treatment may be recommended.
