Protecting Your Kid’s Teeth During Sports Dr. Bart SamuelsonSeptember 4, 2018 Protecting your Kid’s Teeth during sports Protecting your Kid’s Teeth during sports is very important for their wellbeing and your pocketbook. Children’s teeth can get broken off or knocked out and many times these are adult teeth that cannot be replaced for a lifetime. There are options available for a fix, but let’s try to avoid having to come up with a new set of front teeth by protecting the set they have with mouth guard and helmets. Getting implants is always an option but should be used with caution. Let’s give you some examples of sports that are a pretty high impact but have a low teeth injury. Football, it’s a very high impact sport that doesn’t have a lot of dental injuries. Do you know why this is? This is because the players are required to wear helmets with face guards and protection. Don’t get us wrong, we love the kids playing sports. It is great for social skills, team building and exercise to name a few. Get them out there and let them have fun. For most people playing sports in school is the last time they really get to play on teams. Sure there are some adult leagues but then life gets in the way and the leagues are much hard to come by than the school sports. However, please do it in a safe manner. Think about your mouth and teeth’s future. The expense of dental surgery and the pain and time that it can take. Not to mention these injuries are for life. They cannot be put back. When the teeth are gone, they are gone and there are nothing but problems throughout life with that issue. Protect your Child’s Teeth At the very least protect your child’s teeth with a mouthpiece from the sporting goods section. This is better than nothing, but if you’d like to find out more about our customized, feels much better mouth guards, give us a call.
